Description

Each year thousands of canoeists paddle the Ottawa River and its tributaries. The Ottawa is among North America’s great rivers, a fast, turbulent Precambrian Shield river with a political history that is no less so. The Ottawa, as well as the Dumoine, Noire, Coulonge and others, possesses the rugged characteristics that whitewater enthusiasts crave, but there are also many trips to satisfy less daredevil paddlers. The many rivers of the Upper Ottawa Valley watershed hold something for paddlers at any level of experience and ability, and few know these waterways like Hap Wilson. Also included are rivers that flow out of Algonquin Park, the historic Mattawa River, and rivers that connect the interior Temagami region. In addition, this valuable guide contains important outfitting, camping, canoeing and safety tips, as well as notes on the region’s history, geography, archaeology, flora and fauna.

Author’s Comment:

Rivers of the Upper Ottawa Valley was first published as a single river guide for the Dumoine River in 1986. It was Hap Wilson’s first detailed river guide illustrating each rapid; a field-technique Wilson applied later to all his canoeing guidebooks. More than 500 canoe parties were descending the river by the late 1980’s so Wilson expanded the book to include all major rivers flowing in to the grand Ottawa River, effectively “spreading out” canoe traffic to a wider area, lessening the impact on the singular Dumoine River – the same tactic used for his Temagami book published in 1977. The “Three Sisters”, namely – the Dumoine, Noire and Coulonge Rivers are classic Canadian “must paddle” adventures. The book also appeals to the armchair reader; full of legends and stories, this book will keep you rivetted to your seat.
